Note: "Official weight" figures use today's category
weights (2026 relative importance) applied to prices from the selected
period — not the weights BLS actually used back then. This keeps your
custom weights and the official weights on the same basket for a fair
side-by-side comparison across any two dates, but it means older
"official" numbers here won't exactly match BLS's originally published
figure for that month, since spending patterns (e.g. Shelter's weight)
have shifted a lot since.
